An early eighteenth century (1730s) hook-and-spike wall clock with nine-inch dial of the 'zig-zag dial' type (done with 'wrigglework' engraving), distinctive of early Oxfordshire Quaker work and probably made by Thomas Gilkes of Sibford Gower or his son, Richard Gilkes of Adderbury, whose early work followed the Quaker principle of being unsigned to avoid vanity, a sin they fell into later in life. The clock is pictured offered for sale unrestored in the first place. Early Quaker clocks are becoming increasingly scarce. SOLD.
